GarageBand / Logic-lite polarity and phase for bedroom mono bass
GarageBand is the Logic-lite path many bedroom producers start on: Audio Units, a simple mixer, and a phone fold that exposes hollow bass fast. Stock Phase Invert and a true mono check are the first pass. Continuous phase rotation is a different job: leftover stereo bass that still cancels by band after polarity hygiene. PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux). Amount / From / To rotate problem bands so mono fold keeps low end without flattening stereo. GarageBand hosts the AU build. It is not a replacement for Phase Invert, region nudge, or mono audition. Polarity and timing first.
What GarageBand already does
Phase Invert (polarity)
A 180° flip on one path. First fix when a dual-mic, DI+amp, or layered sample fights itself. If body returns on invert, stop. You do not need spectral rotation.
AU plugins slot
Enable Audio Units, quit and relaunch so GarageBand rescans. PHIXER appears as an AU effect. Logic Pro users graduate to Gain Invert / Sample Delay / Phase Tick; the polarity-first habit is the same: Logic Pro AU guide.
Mono / phone fold check
Sum to mono, bounce a mono test, or play on a phone speaker. Headphones lie. Bedroom mono habits: bedroom phase FAQ.
Where stock Phase Invert stops
- Cancel is band-specific. Lows gone, mids still wide. A single 180° flip is too blunt.
- The part must stay stereo. A stereo loop, bus print, or reverb return you cannot collapse without losing the image.
- Invert already tried. Polarity did not restore body. Region nudge did not either. Residual L/R spectral fight remains.
- Timing is a different job. Kick in/out or dual-mic delay needs time-align first, not continuous rotation. Map: phase rotation vs time-align 2025.
GarageBand decision table
| You notice… | First try (stock) | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Body returns when you Phase Invert one path | Keep the invert. Done. | Do not reach for PHIXER. |
| Phone fold thins bass; headphones sound fine | Trust the fold over cans | Re-check with a mono bounce. |
| Stereo bass still hollows by band after Invert + nudge | Null / correlation honesty | PHIXER AU Amount / From / To on that stereo bed. |
| Widener / Haas huge in headphones | Bypass the widener | Mono fold honesty. Not a repair job. |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / sample choice | Not an L/R phase job. |
GarageBand habit (about 90 seconds)
- Mono fold or bounce a mono test. Note what disappears (kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest).
- On dual paths: Phase Invert one side. Re-check mono.
- If timing is the problem, nudge the late region. Re-check. Time-align is not continuous rotation: vs time-align 2025.
- If a stereo bed still cancels by band, audition PHIXER AU. A/B with the plugin bypassed, still in mono.
When AU PHIXER helps in GarageBand
- The clip or bus is already stereo and must stay stereo.
- Phase Invert, region nudge, and mono fold hygiene are cleaned up.
- You can hear clearer mono body with PHIXER engaged and the image still usable in stereo.
- You are not using it to replace Phase Invert or to "fix" Haas / widener width.
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned yet.
- Phase Invert or timing nudge already restored the fold.
- You want PHIXER as a widener or a Phase Invert clone. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
Quick path: GarageBand mono fold → Phase Invert on dual paths → region nudge → PHIXER AU only for leftover continuous L/R fights → mono fold again before share / bounce.
